A Leviticus Life, Part 2: Holy Rhythms - SERMON NOTES

Below are Pastor Ben's sermon notes from this past Sunday, in case they may be helpful for further study.

Intro: (1) series recap (2) sabbath — God’s creation (rest) and Israel’s story (redemption)

Rhythms
1. Passover (4-5): (1) read v.4-5 (2) 14th day of first month (3) remembering birth of nation upon release from Egypt (4) initial use of substitutionary blood (5) Jesus now our Passover lamb (cf. John 1:29) — dies during Passover feast (6) remembering our spiritual birth at communion
2. Feast of Unleavened Bread (6-8): (1) read v.6-7 (2) weeklong feast starting the day after Passover (2) bread had to be made quickly when leaving Egypt (3) yeast = sin (cf. 1 Cor. 5:7) (4) deliverance from sin intended to create “quick” obedience
3. Feast of Firstfruits (9-14): (1) read v.9-12 (2) special day during feast of unleavened bread (3) gratitude for first spring harvest — connected to God bringing them into the land (4) likely day of Jesus’ resurrection (cf. 1 Cor. 15:20) (5) anticipating eternity (cf. blueberry bushes)
4. Feast of Weeks (15-22): (1) read v.15-17 (2) seven weeks after feast of unleavened bread — (i.e. May/June) (2) also connected to harvest — emphasis on sharing with poor (2) aka Pentecost — harvest of souls upon sending of HS (3) HS connected gratitude and giving (cf. back property)
5. Feast of Trumpets (23-25): (1) read v.23-25 (2) first day of the 7th month (2) trumpets a picture of God summoning his people (3) prep for new year to come (4) same imagery applied to Christ’s return (cf. 1 Thess. 4:16-17, Advent) (5) gathering on first day of the week , joy of getting older
6. Day of Atonement (26-32): (1) read v.26-28 (2) 10th day of 7th month — only day of confession in calendar (i.e. Yom Kippur) (2) only time high priest went into holy of holies — Jesus now permanently in God’s presence (cf. Heb. 9:24-26 (3) guy crawling on ice vs. horse-drawn carriage
7. Feast of Booths (33-44): (1) read v.33-35 (2) weeklong festival beginning on 15th day of 7th month (2) temporary structures a reminder of God’s wilderness provision (3) water — Jesus in John 7:37-38 (4) unbeliever — Jesus our spiritual provision (5) believer — trusting Christ our deserts
