Peace Through Scripture Memory

Peace Through Scripture Memory

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:6-7

Though I have always struggled with memorizing verses from the Bible, these are some I have committed to memory and go to often for comfort in the midst of worry/anxiety. Memorizing scripture can be one highly effective vehicle for hiding God’s word in our hearts (Psalm 119:11), and these verses are a great place to start. Below I have listed some suggestions for scripture memory that I picked up from the Navigators ministry. Try them out with the verses above to see if you can memorize them!

  1. Read the verse out loud multiple times slowly and thoughtfully.
  2. Learn the reference first (book, chapter, verse), then move onto one phrase at a time.
  3. Write out the verse several times. Try writing it on note cards that you can place in various places in your home, in the car, and at work, so that you see it often.
  4. Repetition is the key to memorization, so work with the verse for several days, coming back to it again and again to gain familiarity.

As we engage God’s Word through memorization, may we remember that our goal is to hear from and interact with the Author of the words, as opposed to just downloading information. Happy memorizing!
