Trusting Through the Storms
It seems that tornadoes are just part of living in Alabama. I have lived in Alabama my entire life and can remember practicing tornado drills at school and home from the time I was very young. A few weeks ago another potentially tornado-producing line of storms swept through our state. And so our family did as we always do in those times: we faithfully stayed tuned in to the world’s greatest weatherman (James Spann) and kept our bicycle helmets close by in case we needed to dart into our safe space at any moment.
The next morning, after the danger of those storms had passed, I happened to be reading from Psalm 57. The first three verses set the tone for the rest of the psalm:
“Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by. I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me. He will send from heaven and save me; he will put to shame him who tramples on me. God will send out his steadfast love and his faithfulness!”
The Lord reminds us here that he is our safe place when the storms of life come. He is the refuge for our souls. May we never cease to give thanks to Christ that our souls are safe in him. If our faith is in him, then not only has the storm of sin been defeated, but he is also with us in the midst of all the circumstantial storms that blow up in our lives from day to day. We need not fear whatever storm maybe raging against us right now, for Lord is always sending out his steadfast love and faithfulness to those who trust in him.
