Foundations: Worship - SERMON NOTES
Below are Pastor Ben's sermon notes from this past Sunday, in case they may be helpful for further study.
Intro: (1) August preaching (2) valuing God more than anything else — olympians’ quest for gold
Worship as Rest
1. Resting in a person (Mt. 11:28-29): (1) worship begins with an invitation (2) description of us vs. description of Jesus (3) only way to find “rest for your souls” (4) this is hard for us (prodigal son, Mary/Martha) (5) space of silence in corporate worship (6) picture of salvation (7) guy at resort
2. Resting as a people (Psalm 92): (1) written for Sabbath (2) four things it’s good to do together in v.1-3 — v.4 explains why we do these (3) two results of this — planted and flourishing (contrast with v.6-7), endurance to old age (importance of older believers, Jem’s comment about Barry)
Worship as Activity
1. Music (Colossians 3:16): (1) an exhortation for the teachings of and about Jesus to “dwell” in us “richly” (2) how — teaching/admonishing and singing (cf. ABC’s) (3) hearing and seeing each other, songs that reflect biblical truth, appreciation for praise team, meditating on words (worship guide)
2. Movement: (1) bodies/movements part of being human (2) standing — reverence (22:23, 26:12) (3) kneeling — humility (95:6) (4) (4) lifting hands — directing one’s heart toward God (63:3-4) (5) clapping — joy (47:1) (6) dancing — joy (149:3) (7) increases one’s experience (cf. free throws)
Conclusion: the “perfect” sunday — worship is not easy or convenient
