Foundations: Community - SERMON NOTES
Below are Pastor Ben's sermon notes from this past Sunday, in case they may be helpful for further study. To listen to the sermon, click the link above.
Intro: (1) August series (2) community — need to belong (cf. tv shows, social media) (3) five practices
Coming: (1) Acts 20:7-12 (2) “first day of the week” — regular times of meeting (cf. three-legged stool) (3) “breaking bread” — communion, other meals (cf. prayer service, shep groups, Carla) (4) “talked with them” conversation (cf. SS, hallways, shep group) (5) “prolonged his speech” until Eutychus “fell down” and “was taken up dead” — awkward/boring (6) Eutychus revived — miracles in the mess
Caring: (1) “one another’s” (2) Galatians 6:1 — having hard conversations (3) being gentle with each other (3) v.2 bearing one another’s burdens — getting to know one another, asking people how they’re doing and how you can pray for them (4) v.9-10 — doing practical good — signing up to provide meals, watching people’s kids, letting people borrow things (5) app to newer folks
Comforting: (1) 2 Cor. 1:3-4 (2) v.3 — one reason that we praise God is that he comforts us (3) not a guarantee of problems being removed but rather of God’s presence with us in the midst of problems (4) v.4 — one result is that we will be a source of comfort to others (cf. me comforting pregnant mom) (5) different forms — mom, coach, doctor, lawyer, silent sitter (6) trials equip us to minister
Covering: (1) Philippians 4:6-7 (2) ways to pray for others — what makes them anxious, what dermines their gratitude (cf. complaints) (3) ways to do this — worship guide, Friday email, prayers of grace email, shepherding group, prayer service, birthdays/anniversaries, being prayed for by elders, on-the-spot praying (5) hard to remain in relational conflict when we consistently pray for each other
Celebrating: (1) Romans 12:9-15 — rejoicing together (2) Lloyd-Jones — “greatest need of the hour is a joyful church . . . one of the most potent factors in the spread of Christianity” (3) 2 Cor. 6:10 — not the absence of sorrow, but godly perspective in midst of it (cf. Kenyan running community) (4) expressions greeting one another, laughing together, recognizing graduates/babies/newlyweds (5) Angerers
