What the Bible says about the Bible

Who has ascended to heaven and come down? Who has gathered the wind in his fists? Who has wrapped up the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son’s name? Surely you know! Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Do not add to his words, lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar.         Proverbs 30:4-6

It is highly important that we give the Bible the weight it is due. Though the Bible is certainly not God, it is the means by which his self-revelation has been recorded. These verses from Proverbs offer three right responses to God’s words recorded for us in the Bible. First, God’s words are intended to create trust in us toward him, so that we experience him as a shield and refuge. Second, God’s words are intended to create obedience, since those who disregard his words will be rebuked by him, and their lives will be exposed for the falsehood they were built on. Finally, God’s words are intended to create humility, as we submit to him as the only one who has “gathered the wind in his fists” and “established all the ends of the earth.”

Heavenly Father help us to rightly regard your words. May they propel us to trust in you, to further our obedience, and to be humble before you. Amen.
